Many people worry that if they don’t shower daily, they will start to smell “old.”
The Reality: “Old person smell” (often attributed to a compound called 2-nonenal) isn’t caused by a lack of washing. It’s actually a result of the natural breakdown of skin oils over time. Ironically, scrubbing the skin raw can sometimes make this scent more pronounced because it triggers the skin to produce “emergency” oils that oxidize quickly.
The Fix: Staying hydrated from the inside and wearing natural fibers like cotton or wool (which breathe better than polyester) does more for your personal scent than a dozen showers ever could.
Redefining “Clean” in 2025
In our modern world, we’ve been sold the idea that being “squeaky clean” is a health requirement. But for those of us over 65, “squeaky” actually means “too dry.”
By shifting to a schedule of 2-3 full showers a week, supplemented by daily “bird baths,” you aren’t being less hygienic. You are being medically smart. You are protecting your skin’s immunity, reducing your risk of falls, and letting your body’s natural oils do the job they were designed to do.
Do you find that your skin feels better when you skip a day, or are you a “daily or nothing” person? Have you tried the “spot clean” method lately? Let’s talk about the aging skin journey in the comments!
