Why Some People Put Top Sheets On Upside Down
A neatly made bed has a way of making an entire room feel calm and inviting. Many people grow up learning different methods for making a bed, often passed down through parents or grandparents. One of those traditional techniques is placing the top sheet "upside down." While it may sound unusual, there is actually a practical reason behind the habit.
If you've ever wondered why hotels and experienced housekeepers often make beds this way, the answer has less to do with the sheet being upside down and more to do with how the bed looks and feels once it is completely made.
What Does "Upside Down" Really Mean?
Contrary to what many people assume, placing a top sheet upside down doesn't mean reversing the head and foot of the bed.
Instead, it refers to placing the decorative side of the flat sheet facing downward when first laying it on the mattress.
Most flat sheets have a finished hem, embroidery, or decorative trim on one end. When the blanket or duvet is placed on top and the sheet is folded back over it, the decorative side becomes visible, creating a clean and polished appearance.
Why This Tradition Became Popular
Before modern duvet covers became common, top sheets were used to protect blankets from body oils, sweat, and everyday wear. Since blankets were washed less frequently than sheets, this extra layer helped keep bedding cleaner.
Folding the sheet back over the blanket also created an attractive cuff, allowing the finished edge of the sheet to show instead of the unfinished side.
