Step 1: Observe and Note
Keep a little notebook (I always have one handy!) and record:
- When you first noticed the white stool
- How many times it's occurred
- Your dog's overall behavior (eating normally? energetic? lethargic?)
- Any recent diet changes
- Whether your dog has been eating bones or table scraps
Step 2: Check for Other Symptoms
Call your vet immediately if you notice:
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy or weakness
- Abdominal pain or bloating
- Straining to defecate
- Blood in stool
- Diarrhea
Step 3: Review the Diet
- Have you recently given your dog bones?
- Are you feeding a raw diet with bone content?
- Has your dog gotten into the trash or eaten something unusual?
Step 4: When in Doubt, Call the Vet
I've learned over the years that it's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our furry family members. Your vet may want to:
- Run a fecal exam
- Check blood work
- Perform imaging if needed
